Because acquisition only works when a customer is worth more than it costs to win them. Without an approximate customer value and conversion picture, there is no way to judge whether activity would be viable.

What if I don't know some of my numbers?

That is common and it is useful information in itself. Every commercial question has an unsure option, and part of the work is often establishing the measurement that is missing.

Do I need a CRM?

Not necessarily. You need a consistent way to record what happens to an enquiry. If a CRM already exists we work with it; if not, we agree something workable.
